Dear year 5/6 Parents and Guardians,

I would like to start by asking you and your children to stay safe during these uncertain times. This letter comes with a pack of ‘activities’ to work on at home in your child’s enforced absence from school. This pack contains a few things which I will outline and then I will point you in the direction of other materials that you might want to draw upon. Obviously, your child’s wellbeing and safety is our upmost priority right now: this pack is to keep them ‘ticking over’ in terms of their academic work. If they struggle with anything, if you need any further support, advice or help with anything in the pack, please send me an email at dkilpin@calstock.cornwall.sch.uk

I will endeavour to either reply when I can or get something onto the website that will help others in our class as well. Please, don’t feel bad in contacting me – I’m not on holiday, all staff are still working, just not in school.

Your Pack includes:

Maths Activity Mats with various challenges

Practical Ideas sheet

Reading Comprehension

Year 3 4 5 6 spelling list for practise. Read, cover, write, check. The old ways are sometimes the best.

Spag mixed practise sheets

I have included a lined exercise book in which children can record any creative writing they wish- diary and story writing is ideal and as a class we regularly complete ‘Quick Writes’, where the children use a picture as inspiration for their compositions. There is no expectation on this at all but I think a book is a great place to collate any creative expression.

On the school website is a new tab that is marked ‘home learning’. Under this tab, you will see this letter, along with new ideas and bits and pieces that I find that will be published every now and then. I will use this page to post activities and ideas around questions that I am sent, and around national curriculum year 5/6 expectations. This is where I will upload any future Word documents and PowerPoints for you to use/look at/browse through at your leisure!

Please try not to feel overwhelmed by websites and online resources: there is lots more to do with your children that has just as positive an impact:

  • Walks
  • Board games
  • Cooking
  • Craft
  • Sketching and drawing
  • Building with blocks and Lego

Please encourage your child to do any art or design work that they feel inspired to do and please try to keep up regular reading. Accelerated Reader does not allow children to take quizzes at home but it is very good for recommending books to read that are at your child’s level. Finally, times tables practice is always useful!

I hope you all enjoy this extra time at home,

All the best,

Donna Kilpin
