Class 2 Summer Term Home Learning

Summer 2, Letter to Parents

Dear Parents, Carers and Children,

I hope you are all well and have enjoyed some sort of break at half term. I have loved hearing about all of the different things you have been doing over the last few weeks. On this page you will find our new topic menu. Our project for this half term is based around the Vikings. This is a really interesting topic and I have tried to include activities that cover a broad range of different aspects. I hope you find these activities useful and enjoyable. Please also feel free to be creative with this project and allow your child’s interests to direct the areas that they focus on. As before, this menu also contains a number of activities that are based on revision of previously taught skills; this type of practice, together with daily reading if possible, is a very good way to ensure that previous learning continues to be embedded. As always with home learning, if an activity is proving particularly difficult for whatever reason, please move on to something else – home learning should be as enjoyable as possible!

Please note that the red writing on the topic menu refers to documents and activities that can be found in the resources folders.

Our online calls will start again soon, and we are working on some different ways of using this and other platforms. Watch this space for details!

Good luck with everything and please feel free to contact me on jpengelly@calstock.cornwall.sch.uk if you have any questions.

My best wishes to you and all of your families, stay safe and enjoy the sun!

John Pengelly

Week 4 Update

Dear All,

I hope you are all well. It was great to see so many of you at our Get Together; you all look very well and have been up to some really interesting things! I loved hearing about what you’ve been doing. Here are a few more activity ideas for this week:

English

Have a go at this verb recognition activity: https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/zfc2mfr

This is a similar activity to help you identify nouns: https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/zjrdwty

This is a really nice poetry reading lesson (it is designed for Year 4 so it is fine for children to be supported with the reading if necessary): https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/zb2k8xs

Maths

Revise your knowledge of fractions with these activities:

https://www.thenational.academy/year-3/maths/to-recognise-identify-and-describe-unit-fractions-year-3-wk1-3/

https://www.thenational.academy/year-3/maths/to-find-unit-fractions-of-a-given-quantity-year-3-wk1-4/

If you’re feeling confident, have a go at this activity for ordering fractions:

https://www.math-drills.com/fractions/order_fractions_numberline_0024_easy_001.php

And here is a really tricky one for practising finding equivalent fractions (only recommended as an extra challenge!)

Here are some general challenges (they get harder as they go on!):

Well done to all of you who have been on Times Table Rockstars and doing such a great job in our battle with Class 3! There is another new battle with Class 3 – it will end on Friday at 2pm. Good luck!

Science

This is a good lesson to help you revise what you have learned about light sources:

https://www.thenational.academy/year-4/foundation/what-is-light-and-where-does-it-come-from-year-4-wk1-3/

Geography

This is a great activity for revising and practising your map reading:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/zhtyvk7

Spanish – This is an interesting lesson about where Spanish is spoken in the world. It also helps you to practise the alphabet and numbers.

Art – Have a go at drawing the view from your window. There are some great ideas and examples here:

Have a great week!

Week 3 Update

Dear All,

I really hope you are all keeping safe and well and enjoying this amazing weather. It has been really great to talk to people and to hear about all of the interesting things that you’ve been up to. Here are a few extra ideas to keep your brains ticking over and your creativity growing! Please don’t forget – feel free to email me something if you like, or if you have any questions.

English – Have a go at writing a sea adventure. The sea provides lots of inspiration for writers because it can be very beautiful, but also lots of things can go wrong! If you can, try and follow some of these ideas about story structure and characterisation:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zpccwmn

  • Practise your expanded noun phrases with this lesson that revises adjectives and helps you to form interesting descriptive phrases

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/znpbgwx

Maths – Keep your times tables knowledge fresh by doing some of the question sheets like we do in class:

https://www.math-drills.com/multiplication.php#horizontal-multiplication-worksheets

Section 20 is good for working on individual times tables, and the Five Minute Frenzies are great for all multiplications up to 12 x 12

Well done to all of you who have been on Times Table Rockstars (and beating me!). There is a new battle with Class 3 – it will end on Friday at 2pm. Good luck!

Don’t forget the problem of the day: http://www.stoke-climsland.cornwall.sch.uk/home_learning/maths_at_home/maths_at_home.html

Science – Revise your knowledge of what plants need to grow with this quiz and lesson:

https://www.thenational.academy/year-3/foundation/plants-what-conditions-could-we-change-to-investigate-the-growth-of-a-plant-year-3-wk1-3/

Music – Learn about melody and singing with this presentation: https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/z7xsf4j

(they sing Somewhere Only We Know – you’re already great at that!)

Spanish – Practise your vocabulary by playing some of these games. Choose a topic, do the tutorial (so that you know the words) and then play the games. ¡Suerte!

Summer Term Learning Menu

Dear Parents, Carers and Children,

I hope you are all well and have had an enjoyable Easter holiday. It has been really great to talk to lots of you and to hear about all of the things you are doing. Joe Wicks certainly seems to be keeping everyone fit! On this page, you will find our menu of activities for this term. Our topic question is “What Makes Cornwall Special?” and our focus is Sea, Sand and Surf. As I hope you will see from the menu, this project gives a lot of opportunities for interesting research and creative activities. The activities are organised into subject areas and, where appropriate, I have tried to include web links to provide information, activities and, I hope, inspiration. I really hope that the children will find the activities enjoyable and useful. This menu also contains a number of activities that are based on revision of previously taught skills; this type of practice, together with daily reading if possible, is a very good way to ensure that previous learning continues to be embedded. As always with home learning, if an activity is proving particularly difficult for whatever reason, please move on to something else – home learning should be as enjoyable as possible!

Good luck with everything and please feel free to contact me on jpengelly@calstock.cornwall.sch.uk if you have any questions.

My best wishes to you and all of your families, stay safe and enjoy the sun!
